Question on Canning Jars and Lids
I bought a bunch of canning jars and extra lids that I want to stockpile/store
in case things go really south. I have the extra lids packed in plastic zip lock bags with as much of the air evacuated as possible. The Jars have lids on them. Can I just leave the lids on the jars ? How long will the lids that are on the jars remain usable? Should I take the lids off the jars? Is there a better way to store the lids? How long can you store the lids and still use them? I am worried about the sealant compound oxidizing and rendering the lids unusable. Thanks in advance for any input. |
Re: Question on Canning Jars and Lids
I buy lids in bulk, and pack the regular size in wide-mouth pint jars. The wide-mouth lids go into mylar bags. Both jars and bags are then vacuum sealed, and stored in a cool, dark place.
I've used lids that had been kicking around in their original cardboard cartons for ten years: and had no problems. I expect the vacuum-packed ones will be good long after I'm gone. |
